We develop an endogenous growth model with data as innovation, in which big data

promotes quality innovation (through affecting the possibility and magnitude of successful quality-enhancing innovations) and variety innovation (through effective labor forces as a fixed cost) and hence economic growth in the long run. The optimal growth rate is larger than the equilibrium growth rates under two data property right regimes. Data property rights matter for equilibrium growth and equilibrium welfare, the comparisons of which largely hinge on three important parameters: the weight for privacy, the frequency for creative destruction and the elasticity of substitution for goods. We also examine the interactions between quality innovation and variety innovation in this model.
