We discuss mean curvature for polyhedral surfaces in Euclidean space and hyperbolic space. We explain how constant mean curvature surfaces could be induced from circle packings in the plane. This construction is a discrete analogue of the Weierstrass representation and circle packings play the role of holomorphic data. Indeed, William Thurston proposed circle packings in the plane as discrete holomorphic functions.
