A long-standing question in ecology is the role of stochastic temporal environmental fluctuations in the dynamics and structure of ecological communities. The classic interpretation of deterministic models in ecology is that environmental fluctuations are best viewed as noise that cause fluctuations about an equilibrium or other deterministic attractor, which if sufficiently large, might cause species extinctions. In an alternative view, temporal environmental fluctuations do not just cause populations to fluctuate but may change the very structure of a biological community. In this talk we will introduce a lottery competition model with non-stationary parameters and discuss its dynamical and probabilistic behavior.
