The concept of Invariant random von Neumann subalgebras was introduced by Amrutam-Hartman-Oppelmayer in 2023 as a generalization of invariant random subgroups (IRSs), a notion in group theory, to study the structure of von Neumann subalgebras in group von Neumann algebras. They are defined as probability measures on the space of subalgebras that are invariant under the action of the group. In this talk, we explain the motivation, classification and consequences of studying this concept. Most of the talk is based on joint work with Amrutam Tattwamasi.
