In this talk, we are concerned with whether Halmos’ result concerning irreducible approximation can be extended to several special classes E of operators, that is, to determine whether those irreducible ones in E are norm dense in E. We answer the preceding question for hyponormal operators, subnormal operators, p-hyponormal operators, von Neumann operators, normaloid operators and weighted shifts.
