Many sports data are continuous and can be treated as functional data. Examples include soccer players' maximum accelerations throughout their careers, rowing stroke rates and speeds during races, and the EMG curves of muscles with their corresponding body accelerations, among many others. This talk explores how functional data analysis (FDA) can be applied in sports analytics through three projects. First, I will talk about an analysis of soccer players' maximum acceleration in relation to age and provide insights into predicting future player performance. Next, I will discuss how a function-on-function regression model can be used to study the effect of an individual or team's stroke rate on their speed in rowing races. Finally, I will introduce a sparse estimation method for historical functional linear models and demonstrate its use in exploring the effect of muscle activation on body acceleration.
主讲人简介:
关天玉,加拿大约克大学数学与统计系助理教授,师从统计学家曹际国教授,于2020年获加拿大西蒙菲莎大学统计学博士学位。研究方向集中于开发函数型数据分析与机器学习的新方法,并成功应用于体育科学、运动机能学及公共卫生等交叉学科领域,研究成果发表于多个统计学与体育科学期刊,加拿大国家自然发现基金和加拿大统计科学研究所体育统计合作研究项目负责人,现任Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports副编辑,积极推动统计方法论在体育分析中的应用。
